Jewish Ghetto in Rome

posted by admin in General

One of the most charming neighbourhoods in Rome is the Jewish Ghetto, which also happens to be the second oldest in the world, after the one in Venice. Actually the word ghetto derives from the venetian “gheto” which means: a place with a foundry.

The roman ghetto was established on 1555 and lasted for around 3 centuries. The Jews were restricted to live inside its walls, locked at night, walls built with money paid by themselves. Those were hard times for the Jewish community, because all their rights were also revoked, they suffered many prohibitions, poor hygienic conditions, humiliations, among other impositions.

Don’t miss the plaque that remembers the massive roman Jew’s extradition, that took place on October 16th, 1943; when german soldiers captured around 1,000 persons (200 children included), who were afterwards sent to Auschwitz, from which only 17 persons survived.

If you are curious to see this area, is close to the river Tiber and Campo dei Fiori. Nowadays it                                              counts with many popular restaurants and the new Synagogue of Rome.  Don’t forget to try one of their specialities like the fried artichokes. We can surely recommend these Kosher restaurants:

Ba Ghetto: Via Del Portico D’ottavia 2, Closed Friday dinner and Saturday lunch, +39 06.68.30.00.77

Taverna del Ghetto: Via del Portico D’Ottavia, 8, +39 06 6880 9771. Closed Friday dinner.

Nasoni

posted by admin in General

« Nasoni » is an Italian word, which means “big noses”. In Rome it indicates the typical small fountains that you can see in the centre ofRome, distributing free drinking water. The funny name is due to the typical curved shape of the faucet, which looks like a big nose. Just inside the walls of the city there are nearly three hundred “nasoni”, that refresh the tourists and the inhabitants during the roman hot Summer.

They made their first appearance a few years after Italywas born, when the Mayor of the city had the idea to place these fountains throughout the whole city. One of the oldest “nasoni” (still perfectly working) is in Piazza della Rotonda, near the Pantheon.

At the beginning, however, (even before taking the well-known nickname) these water dispensers had three spouts instead of one, and they were decorated with a dragon’s head. You can see a modern reconstruction in a downtown street, which is called via delle Tre Cannelle (“three spouts street”).

Portaportese

posted by admin in General

Portaportese, the protagonist of lots of songs and movies of Roman culture, is the largest and most famous Sunday market in Rome. It extends from Via Via Ippolito Nievo and Via Portuense, reaching up to Viale Trastevere and of course the square from which it takes its name, Piazza di Porta Portese.

Opens very early in the morning, around 6:00 a.m. and closes at around 14:00.
There you can find anything, new and used clothing and shoes, sandwiches, false brands, old bicycles, motorcycle helmets, suitcases, bags, home accessories, plants, records, antiques, furniture, records, CD , umbrellas, key chains, toys, cosmetics and everything that comes to your mind.
When I arrived I was convinced not to buy anything and I went away with loads of envelopes. It is impossible to resist a pair of shoes or jeans at 10 euros. The seller of jeans has also given me  the recipe for a special sauce while I was trying his jeans on. This is Portaportese: they  call you, then they cheat you. If you get hungry they insult you, and finally, you become friend. My advice: go very early or very late, at peak  hour yourisk of having difficulty walking among beggars, vendors, tourists and crowds. Beware of your wallets: Portaportese is a heaven for pickpockets.

Salvador Dalì, the exhibition

posted by admin in General

Also this year, after Giotto and Van Gogh last year, the Vittoriano in Rome has decided to call the attention of art lovers. The exhibition “Salvador Dali: the man, the artist” opened on March 10 and ends on June 30.

The title given to the exhibition clearly refers to the ethos of the painter, where the two sides were together, impossible to divide. His life was art, he was art. Although knowing very little about his life, it is difficult to understand how much Dali felt to be different from others.

Hours: open every day. Monday to Thursday: 9.30-18.30 Friday and Saturday 9.30-22.30. Sunday 9.30-19.30
Tickets: Adult € 12.00   Reduced  € 8.50

You don’t need to spend a lot a money to see the masterpieces left by famous artists like Michelangelo di Buonarroti. It is true though that in order to see the Sixtine Chapel you need to pay out €15, but believe us they are totally worth it, because the painting of the Final Judgement is impressive, not to mention all the artistic heritage inside the Vatican Museum. Nevertheless throughout the city there are many things that can be enjoyed for free:

Christ that carries the cross
Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Piazza della Minerva, closet to the Pantheon Visiting hours: 7-19:00 hrs.
